What Happens When You Bring Puppies to the Mat

I live with five animals. Han and Surya are my biological daughters — both cats. Nova is my son. And then, through marriage, there's Zizi and Frau Koditz. That's why puppy yoga feels like home to me — and why I'm glad to be leading the sessions organised by Puppy Yoga România on May 10th in Timișoara.

What It Actually Is

Puppy yoga is exactly what it sounds like: a yoga session with a few very enthusiastic puppies right there on the mat with you. Not in a crate, not in another room. On the mat. Next to you. Sometimes on you.

A session runs about 45–50 minutes, followed by 10 minutes where you can take photos, give a few more ear scratches, and say goodbye to the four-legged friends you just spent an hour with.

How a session breaks down

50% yoga, 45% cuddles, and 5% when someone has a little accident on the studio floor. It happens. It's part of the experience.

You Don't Need to Know Yoga to Come

That's the first thing people ask. "But what if I don't know yoga?"

That's exactly why you come. This isn't an advanced class. It isn't a test. It's a space where you give yourself permission to slow down, breathe a little more than usual, and let a puppy decide that your back is the perfect napping spot.

If yoga isn't on your weekly schedule, puppy yoga might be the friendliest introduction possible. And if it already is — this is a reminder that practice can be easy, warm, and a little chaotic. All of that is fine.

Why the Puppies Are Chosen Carefully

The puppies at our sessions are chosen with care by Puppy Yoga România. We often work with pups who are leaving home for the first time — for them, the class is a vital part of socialisation. New smells, new sounds, new people.

It's something to watch them open up, class by class, becoming more curious and more confident. It's not a performance for them — it's a new experience, and the people in the room are part of it.

The Moment I Always Notice

There's a moment in every puppy yoga session you can't plan and can't force. It's when someone in the room, mid-pose, suddenly bursts out laughing because a puppy just licked their face or climbed onto their stomach with full conviction.

After that moment, the tension is gone. Everyone is present. Not at work, not in traffic, not inside their own head.

That's the point of any yoga class, really. Puppies just get there faster.

Han, Surya, Nova, Zizi and Frau Koditz will not be attending on May 10th. They're more the type to chair the meeting than to participate in it.
